39th PSM Convention and Scientific Meeting (Pre-registration Extended up to March 15)

The scenario of microbes completely wiping out humanity is not impossible. New mutant forms of potently damaging viruses like the influenza AH1N1, HIV, ebola, dengue, hepatitis and papilloma viruses are rapidly evolving which constantly threaten man’s continued existence. Increased antibiotic resistance of bacterial pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli 0157:H7, among others also creates so many problems to human and animal health. Furthermore, fungi, protozoa and other microbial parasites are all over that may also cause health problems..

But thanks to microbiology and biotechnological R&D advances, there’s an assurance of defense against these bad microbes. The good microbes are here to protect us from the bad ones. There are also many microbes that are useful in so many ways such as in food processing and preservation, in promoting human and animal health and in enhancing immunity (probiotics), in promoting plant health (biofertilizers and biocontrol agents), and as wild strains or genetically modified strains that are precursors of modern day pharmaceuticals and industrial products such as antibiotics, enzymes, organic acids, amino acids, biofuels, lactic acid, among others. Microbes also help maintain the environment and promote balanced ecosystem.

Hence, this year’s theme is fitting for today’s pressing world concerns: health, food security, water crisis, global warming, energy and the environment. Microbiology and biotechnology, through various scientific tools, are key fields that unlock the treasure chest in tapping microorganisms and other living organisms for the benefit of man and preservation of nature. Indeed, microbes are always at work for us and for mother nature.

The Convention Venue
